On top of our established, viable and accepted electronics import and distribution business, in line with the Ethiopian government Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), we have decided that it is the right time to get involved in the most important hard currency earner that our country has to offer which is coffee. Coffee is a very important crop for Ethiopia.

In fact it is seldom called the “Green Gold”. In line with our organizational culture and corporate culture we want to establish a viable, solid and respected coffee producing, processing and exporting company. Hanson Trading and Industry PLC, has built over the years a good reputation and the public’s good will as our core values lie in providing excellent products and services accompanied with integrity and honesty.

Our new business is set with this in mind. We want to create a specialty coffee producing, processing and exporting business which will be renowned for top quality product and also for integrity, loyalty and honesty that are the core principles that are deeply rooted in our organizational culture. Our main focus along with creating a brand that will be loved and trusted by our esteemed customers, also meeting our corporate social responsibility objectives by taking care of the smallholder coffee farmers located in the processing facility site. We are working on plans to better the lives of the farmers by introducing multifaceted social services such as the provision of school materials, health services, and education aimed at bettering the lives of the local communities. Also, we have plans to undertake our acquisition of beans from the farmers in the most ethical and correct manner by providing fair compensation for their coffee and for their hard work.

ABOUT ETHIOPIAN COFFEE

Ethiopia is the primary center of origin of the Arabica coffee plant. Coffea Arabica has been growing wild in the forests of the Southwestern Highlands of Kaffa and Buno districts of Ethiopia for thousands of years. As legend has it, coffee was discovered in Ethiopia in the 9th century by a goat-herder named Kaldi. He noticed that his goats became hyper after eating the cherries from the coffee tree, so he tried it himself. A monk approached Kaldi after he consumed the cherries and took some to his monastery.

The monk roasted and brewed the coffee to share with other monks. As a result, they were able to stay awake during long nights of prayer. Since then, coffee has been widely accepted as a stimulant drink.

Ethiopia has over 70 ethnic groups that speak over 200 languages. As a result, coffee is referred to as Bunna (Amharic), Bun (Tigrigna), Buna (Oromifa), Bono (Kefficho), and Kawa (Guragigna). Some argue that most names for coffee are derived from the names of the districts Kafa and Buno. The French and Spanish call it Cafe, the Italians call it Caffe, the Germans call it Kaffee, the Finnish call it Kahvi, the Dutch call it Koffie, and the Greek call it Kafes. All are phonetic approximations of the Ethiopian word.

SPECIALITY COFFEE (YIRGACHAFFE)

Single-origin coffee is coffee grown within a single known geographic origin, meaning a single farm. The name of the coffee is then usually the place it was grown to whatever degree available. Single-origins are viewed by some as a way to get a specific taste, and some independent coffee shops have found that this gives them a way to add value over large chains.

There are no real rules or governing body enforcing the labeling of coffee. A single origin coffee could be:

  • Coffee entirely from one farm.
  • Coffee from multiple farms in the same general area. (very common)
  • Coffee from multiple farms in the same country.

These four regions of Ethiopia are the primary coffee bean growing regions. Each is marketed separately as their own Ethiopian coffee brands:

  • Harrar
  • Limu
  • Sidamo
  • Yirgacheffe

Types of single-origin

Estate coffees are a specific type of single-origin coffee. They are generally grown on a single farm, which might range in size from a few acres to large plantations occupying many square miles, or a collection of farms which all process their coffee at the same mill.

Micro-lot coffees are another type of specific single-origin coffee from a single field on a farm, a small range of altitude, and specific day of harvest.

Yirgacheffe

The washed Yirgacheffe is one of the best highland-grown coffees. It has fine acidity, body, and flavor. Many people are attracted to its delicate, floral, and tea-like characteristics.

Top grade Yirgacheffe coffees share many characteristics with the best Sidama coffees. Fruit flavors, a bright acidity, and a silky mouth feel are some of its hallmarks.

Yirgacheffe produces both washed and unwashed coffees. While it originally became famous mostly for its washed coffees, recent years have seen the export of some highly sought-after top-rate unwashed coffees as well. Top grade washed coffees from Yirgacheffe are renowned for bright citrus acidity, often with a lemony character, with excellent sweetness. The other hallmarks of the coffee are a light, herbaceous quality that compliments the fruit flavors well, for a complex and flavorful coffee.

The best unwashed coffees from Yirgacheffe often retain a high degree of acidity, with softer fruit flavors and sometimes berry characteristics.

Coffee Designations

All Yirgacheffe coffees are given a grade, as well as a letter characteristic, either A or B. Unlike with the other large coffee regions, these letters do indeed make a qualitative distinction. For all Yirgacheffe coffees, the letter A designates “coffee having Yirgacheffe flavor”; the letter B designates “coffee lacking Yirgacheffe flavor. It is possible to find specialty grade coffees among the B category. These would be coffees with excellent cup characteristics, but characteristics that cannot be considered “classic Yirgacheffe flavor.” The delivery center for all Yirgachefe coffees is the nearby large town of Dilla.

All commercial grade coffee, washed and unwashed, graded 3 through 9, is simply called Yirgacheffe A or Yirgacheffe B. Both categories include the four Yirgacheffe zones:

Yirgachefe A: Yirgachefe, Wenago, Kochere, Gelena/Abaya

Yirgachefe B: Yirgachefe, Wenago, Kochere, Gelena/Abaya

Specialty grade coffee both washed and unwashed, graded Q1 and Q2, is given a designation by one of the four zones in Yirgacheffe. The A and B designations, once again, refer to the presence or lack of classic Yirgacheffe flavor.
